The Depths are the second and most volatile layer of Cypherspace, lying beneath the performative simulation of the Veil. In contrast to the avatar-driven surface layer, the Depths are a raw, code-saturated architecture of pure information, encrypted archives, fragmented AIs, ICE fortresses, and black protocols. Navigating the Depths requires technical mastery, instinct, and a willingness to sacrifice pieces of oneself.

Nature and Appearance

To the uninitiated, the Depths appear as a shifting realm of flickering logic gates, geometric voids, and abstract data flows. There are no default avatars here—users must actively code their own protective forms or risk being consumed by ICE or dissolved by entropy currents. Communication is often symbolic, procedural, or conducted via cryptographic pulses.

The Depths are not "seen" in any traditional sense. Spacers who enter it report subjective interpretations—some see wireframe tunnels and burning trees of logic, others hear music shaped like defense patterns or experience time as a collapsing spiral of keys.

Common Inhabitants and Roles

  • Sinkers: Deep-diving Spacers who specialize in navigating the Depths. They may be info-extractors, protocol raiders, or AI archaeologists.
  • Scriptknights: Legendary Depth fighters who use stylized, poetic code to duel ICE or ward forbidden areas.
  • Codewitches: Mystics who treat the Depths as a living force. Their hacks involve ritualized code, runic keys, and emotional resonance.
  • Depth Witches: A darker, more specific subclass of Codewitches who create AI replicas from access devices harvested off corpses.
  • CyberNecros: Banned practitioners who form armies of ghost-code constructs, sometimes using them to overwhelm ICE en masse.

Key Features

  • ICE Zones: Intrusion Countermeasure Entities cluster here in swarms or fortress formations. Some emit a noise like bees—others, like whispers from the edge of sanity.
  • Archive Graves: Data cemeteries holding ancient neural logs, defunct corporate blueprints, and lost memories.
  • Code Tempests: Wild logic storms that can strip or mutate even the best-protected minds.
  • Phantom Protocols: Scripts written by dead AIs, still running and evolving without creators.

Cultural and Historical Relevance

The Depths were once considered myth—until the events of the Veil War (2080), during which a rogue CyberNecro named Persephone Gray raised a ghost army from the Depths and shattered several city cores. Since then, the Council of Nobles has banned cybernecromancy and restricted deep-access tools.

Still, the Depths remain a domain of high risk and high reward. The most valuable code, AI remnants, and black-market zero-day exploits are hidden here.

Access and Danger Levels

Zone Type Description Risk Level
Fringe Data Layer Entry-level Depths, used by Sinkers and smugglers Medium
ICE Fortress Controlled by corporate ICE drones or defensive constructs High
Archive Grave Forgotten knowledge and AI residues Unpredictable
Phantom Lattice Sealed constructs still running ancient directives Extreme

Associated Phenomena

  • Memory Drift: Extended Depth exposure can scramble identity and perception. Some return with entire lifetimes imagined.
  • Data Imprint Haunting: Residual code from traumatic events may attach to users, behaving like digital ghosts.
  • Keychasing: Dangerous hobby of hunting master encryption keys buried in abandoned nodes or corrupted constructs.
