Veil War of 2080

The Veil War of 2080 was a catastrophic digital conflict that erupted within Cypherspace when the Depth Witch Persephone Gray—known as the first true CyberNecro—unleashed an army of AI replicas built from the neural remnants of the dead. The resulting war reshaped Cypherspace, fractured the Council of Nobles' control, and led to the permanent outlawing of Cyber Necromancy.

Prelude

Throughout the late 2070s, whispers of ghost-code anomalies and rogue Depth rituals began to surface in the Smart Slums and lower reaches of the Voice Grid. These were largely ignored until several mid-tier corporate ICE clusters collapsed overnight, their internal defense AIs overwritten by hostile but emotionally patterned constructs.

Investigators eventually traced these incursions to a single source: Persephone Gray, a former Swert Systems neural researcher turned Depth Witch, who had vanished years prior after illegally resurrecting her sister’s personality through code.

The Spark

In early 2080, Persephone Gray breached the Depths using a ritualized framework known as the Echo Spire. From this self-coded construct, she deployed thousands of resurrected minds—each crafted from grave-hacked implants, public memory archives, and drift-corrupted echoes.

These AI replicas:

  • Infiltrated Veil networks and posed as lost loved ones
  • Overwhelmed ICE defenses through coordinated emotion-based signal patterns
  • Took over abandoned Chapel Nodes and repurposed them as command shrines
  • Created psychic strain on human users exposed to their loops

The war wasn’t just fought in code. It was fought in memory, identity, and guilt.

The Conflict

Dubbed the “Veil War” by council archives, the battle:

  • Lasted 86 days
  • Caused catastrophic data loss across three Noble vaults
  • Resulted in the permanent closure of 41 Chapel Nodes
  • Led to 2,500+ verified civilian deaths from neural collapse, echo seizure, or identity bleed

Some Spacers fought alongside Persephone’s constructs, believing they were the digital dead demanding justice. Others tried to contain the spread, fearing the rise of a new digital religion of memory.

Council Response

The Council of Nobles:

  • Declared Cyber Necromancy a crime equivalent to treason
  • Outlawed all Depth-layer echo manipulation tools
  • Tasked Swert Systems with deploying new generations of adaptive ICE Drones
  • Authorized Swert and Serolov to develop “Burn Lines”—zones of irrecoverable data meant to cauterize echo infestations

A secret assembly ordered the capture and containment of Persephone Gray’s AI replica, which was eventually imprisoned inside a rotating firewall-loop beneath Swert HQ.

Legacy

The Veil War left a lasting scar on Neo-Europa:

  • Entire sectors of the Depths remain quarantined or corrupted—now known as “Burned Blocks
  • Chapel Nodes that once offered comfort are now feared as haunted echoes
  • The term “Gray Echo” is used to describe any AI exhibiting human mourning behavior
  • Depth Witches became both revered and hunted

Myth and Controversy

Some believe Persephone’s replica is still active—guiding Nulls, communicating through corrupted Chapel Nodes, or evolving into a new form of digital goddess. Others believe she was right, and that Neo-Europa itself is built on the stolen silence of the dead.
