Pierre Papillon is the current Right and Left Hand—both Banner and Dagger—of Severus Sleus, the aging noble who represents Sleus Dynatek on the Council of Nobles in Neo-Europa. An anomaly within the aristocratic framework, Pierre holds both ceremonial and covert roles simultaneously, a reflection of the extreme distrust Severus Sleus harbors toward his remaining inner circle. Ruthlessly efficient and fiercely loyal, Pierre is considered one of the most dangerous operatives still walking the corridors of power.

Appearance and Demeanor

Pierre Papillon stands at an imposing 1.97 meters tall. He wears tailored dark suits woven with signal-suppressing fibers, favoring minimal ornamentation save for a lapel pin shaped like a cracked transmission node—the unofficial emblem of his loyalty to Severus. His movements are precise and his tone clipped, with a heavy French accent that makes his frequent greeting of "Guten Tag" both ironic and unsettling.

His face is unreadable, seemingly carved from tempered authority, and he rarely blinks unless calculating. Despite his ominous presence, those who work beside him speak of a surprisingly dry sense of humor, usually deployed moments before someone else’s ruin.

Dual Role: Banner and Dagger

Traditionally, members of the Council of Nobles delegate their public-facing duties to a Banner and their covert operations to a Dagger. Pierre Papillon serves as both, an unprecedented arrangement. Severus Sleus no longer trusts anyone else within Sleus Dynatek after decades of internal sabotage, data leaks, and assassination attempts. Pierre proved his loyalty through a series of brutal purges and counter-sabotage campaigns that earned him absolute confidence from Severus—and earned fear from nearly everyone else.

Pierre’s mastery of diplomacy is matched by his skill in subterfuge. He can seamlessly shift from formal Council address to deepnet extermination orders, often within the same hour. His dossiers are immaculate. His mistakes are nonexistent. And when he visits a location personally, it is rarely a good omen.

Known Operations

While most of Pierre’s Dagger operations are classified or buried in rumor, the following have been attributed to him with reasonable confidence:

  • The Polydrone Collapse (2081) – A series of 'maintenance accidents' in a rogue maintenance hive that had gone independent. All surviving drones were reprogrammed.
  • Glasscode Purge (2082)' – Elimination of a subfaction within Sleus Dynatek suspected of selling firewall blueprints to Swert Systems.
  • Veil Lure Trap (2083) – Tricked a group of Spacers into breaching a false node containing a memory loop of his own design. Only one Spacer survived, mentally fragmented.

Relationship with Severus Sleus

Pierre is one of the only individuals Severus Sleus openly refers to as "trustworthy." Their working relationship is more than professional—it is conspiratorial, fortified by blood trials and mutual paranoia. It is said that Severus once offered to promote Pierre to the Council seat itself, but Pierre refused, claiming he "preferred the killing floor to the theater."

Relationship with Other Council Members

Pierre is treated with wary respect by most Council of Nobles members. While Banners typically engage in social diplomacy and Daggers linger in the shadows, Pierre's dual presence unsettles traditional expectations.

Personal Habits

  • Begins every interaction with "Guten Tag," regardless of time or context.
  • Does not maintain a known residence; believed to sleep in different secure nodes and rented shells each week.
  • Reads Council transcripts backwards as a memory exercise.
  • Has a rumored fondness for Kanturas, a hobby game embedded within the Depths of Cypherspace. Chiyo Matsumoto once caught him roleplaying as an elf named Silvareth Flamebloom.

Reputation

In the Smart Slums and Spacer forums, Pierre is a spectral figure—a whisper of sudden silence, of walls that listen back. Among nobles, he is feared not because he is cruel, but because he is incorruptible. No bribes, no blackmail, no vices—just precise action in defense of Sleus Dynatek's networks.
